Rutherford quits Lancers for Mussels

JASON Rutherford has quit Lancing Football Club to join local rivals Shoreham.

In a shock move, Rutherford has switched to Middle Road to take up a joint managerial role with Mark Burt for next season.

He had led Lancers to a second-place finish in County League Division 1 last campaign in just his second year at the club in a joint role with boss Martin Gander.

It was in stark contrast to Mussels, who finished in the bottom three in the same division for the past two seasons, but now look set to again be handed a reprieve and Rutherford is aiming to turn around the fortunes of his local club.

He said: “It’s easy for me, I live two minutes from the ground and I wanted to go there. All we have to do to improve next year is not finish in the bottom three and all we need is to get a few guys in to do that.”

For more reaction from both sides and more from Rutherford, pick up the Shoreham Herald or Worthing Herald on Thursday (May 24).
