Rye begin RUR Cup defence

The Quarterboys will make the long trip to Selsey - the team they beat back in April to win the county competition for the first time since 1968 - in a second round tie tomorrow (Saturday).

Two Sam Adams penalties gave Rye a 2-0 victory at the Sussex FA County Ground in Lancing some four-and-a-half months ago even though Rye’s performance that night was far from convincing.

“I’d take a repeat of the result, but obviously I would rather play better and win,” said Rye manager Scott Price, who says he won’t be fielding weakened sides in the knockout competitions this term.

Rye beat Selsey all three times the teams met last term, including an 8-1 drubbing at The Salts last September, and they’ve made a far better start to the new campaign than the West Sussex outfit.

Price’s charges are fourth in Sussex County Football League Division One having won three and drawn two of their first five games, while Selsey are 18th with four points from the same number of matches.

Scott Ramsay, who scored a hat-trick on Rye’s last visit to the High Street Ground in the league during March, can’t play because he’s moving, but Rye should otherwise be pretty much at full strength.
