Rye eye prize FA Cup scalp

The Sussex County Football League Division One side will travel to Ryman League Division One South outfit Worthing for an intriguing preliminary round tie.

Rye manager Scott Price said: “We’ve got to believe we can win and I do believe we can win. Whoever we play against we will create chances because of the players we’ve got, but firstly we’ve got to learn to take them and secondly to concentrate for 90 minutes.”

Price’s side has picked up eight points from a possible 12 in the league so far, while Worthing have lost their two league games to date, the second of which was at home to 2011/12 Sussex County League champions Three Bridges.

“It should be a good test,” Price went on. “Worthing will have a lot more of the ball than any other team we’ve played this year, but as long as we concentrate and keep it tight...”

Although they ply their trade a division lower than their opponents, Rye were victorious on their last visit to Woodside Road in February 2011 when goals from Duncan McArthur, Danny Leach and Matt Maclean gave them a 3-2 win in a Sussex Senior Cup tie.

“I think the side we’ve got now isn’t as good at the moment, but I think it will be,” continued Price, who expects Andy Atkin to return after sitting out the midweek league win at Crowborough Athletic with a hip problem and Joe White to come back in as well.
