This stalemate away to top five side Horsham YMCA, however, would have been a good deal more pleasing than the one at home to bottom half side Lancing seven days earlier.

As reported by www.horshamymcafc.co.uk, the scoreline told the story of an arduous Sussex County Football League Division One affair, during which both sides struggled to create many cleacut chances.

Former Horsham front man Evan Archibald caused the hosts’ defence early problems with his energetic start and he should have perhaps done better just before the quarter-hour mark when his glancing header bounced straight up at YM goalkeeper Sam Smith from six yards.

The home side’s only shot on target in the first half came courtesy of a tame Liam Hunter free kick as YM found it difficult to create a single opening on goal.

The visitors’ best opportunity came as Jack Hope guided a header inches wide of the far upright midway through the half before Ben Billings’ free kick was comfortably held by Smith just before the break.

Although slightly more dominant in possession after the restart, YM’s second half showing still didn’t warrant a winner. Brad Curtis blasted over when well placed on the edge of the area before an encouraging passage of play culminated in Craig Grantham’s bullet header flying just the wrong side of the upright.

Anthony Storey should have punished the home side for a poorly cleared corner, but the midfielder volleyed off target from six yards when unmarked at the back post. A moment of magic then almost won it for YM at the death as Dave Brown’s swerving 30-yard strike was well tipped over by Quarterboys goalkeeper Greg Nessling in added time.
