Rye on a high ahead of leaders’ visit

Rye United are on a high going into the visit from table-topping Crawley Down tonight (Monday).

The Quarterboys thrashed second-placed Three Bridges 4-0 in Division One of the Sussex County Football League at a sunsoaked Salts on Saturday.

Rye goalkeeper Josh Pelling denied a clean through Lee Carney at 0-0 and Scott Ramsay headed the hosts into a 38th minute lead just two minutes after having a huge penalty appeal turned down.

Ramsay made it 2-0 with another header in the 57th minute and Liam Upton put the result beyond doubt with a super solo goal seven minutes later. Upton rounded-off the scoring with his second in the 89th minute.

Elsewhere in Division One, Sidley United fought out a 1-1 draw at home to Arundel. The Blues fell behind in first half stoppage time, but Terry Payne salvaged a point with a late penalty after an away player was sent-off.

Westfield came from behind to stun Division Two leaders Lancing 2-1 at The Parish Field. Martin Brain drove home the equaliser and Tom Archer headed the winner from Peter Baker’s corner.

Also in Division Two, Bexhill United’s promotion hopes suffered a major setback with a 3-2 defeat at home to AFC Uckfield despite equalising twice through Scott McDonald and Allan McMinigal after Joe White was red carded.

Little Common remain without a Division Two victory since early October after drawing 0-0 at home to mid-table Storrington.
