Rye target Borough upset

Rye United manager Scott Price insists his team can pull off a huge upset against Eastbourne Borough.

Sussex County League outfit Rye will attempt to bridge a gap of four divisions when they travel to Blue Square Bet Premier strugglers Borough for a Sussex Senior Cup quarter-final tonight (Tuesday).

Asked if he genuinely believes Rye can get a result, Price said: “Yeah I do. We’ve got to go there and believe we can win. Hopefully they’ll win Saturday so they might rest a few players, but I think they’ll be quite strong. Being underdogs as well will probably suit us.”

Four members of the Rye squad - Jack Dixon, Danny Leach, Duncan McArthur and Scott Ramsay - have had spells at Borough with Ramsay’s goals playing a key role in their remarkable rise through the divisions to the top of the non-league pyramid.

The winners will take on Sussex League leaders Crawley Down in the semi-finals and the final will be the first match to be played at Brighton & Hove Albion’s new Amex Stadium during July.

Rye have already knocked out one higher grade outfit in Ryman Division One South club Worthing in the last 16 and they will be boosted by the presence of ex-Brighton professional Paul Watson for the first time in a while. Danny Ellis and Shaun Loft are suspended.

Elsewhere tonight, Bexhill United will take on Sussex County League Division Two leaders Lancing in the first ever senior midweek league fixture to be played under floodlights at The Polegrove.
