Season review - Westfield

Westfield’s joint manager believes the future is rosy for the Sussex County League Division Two outfit after an encouraging 2010-11 campaign.

At the end of his third term in charge alongside Duncan Jones, Harris said: “We’ve had a decent season and we think next season could be very interesting at Westfield.”

Harris, Jones and assistant Mat Ball effectively had to start from scratch last summer with a crop of young players possessing little experience of senior football following the departure of several senior figures.

But Westfield have spent the majority of the last nine months in the upper reaches of the table and were only denied an 11th top half finish in 12 seasons by six defeats in their final seven matches as injuries and suspensions took their toll on a small squad.

“We had a really good first two thirds of the season,” continued Harris, “it’s just been the last few weeks when injuries and suspensions have caught up with us and we’ve looked very lightweight as a squad.

“The way the boys have gelled together, the team spirit and atmosphere we’ve got in the squad have been the highlights. We’ve worked very well as a group and we’ve had some good performances throughout the season.”

Harris is optimistic of keeping the vast majority of the current squad together, including striker David Pugh – the division’s second highest scorer with 31 league goals and 32 in all competitions.
