Selsey don't want to get the lower-table Blues again

SELSEY boss Adam Hinshelwood is confident his team can command a higher league position next season after a campaign that saw the Blues end too close for comfort to the Sussex League division-one relegation places.

A long and arduous season saw Adam Hinshelwood’s Selsey side finish 18th - just four points clear of the drop zone.

The club’s top-flight status was secured with a point at East Preston, a game in which midfielder Matt Wood scored an unbelievable 40-yard dipping volley.

It is a final league position that Hinshelwood believes was fully justified.

“I always feel that the position at the end of the season is the right one so I have no complaints that we deserved to finish there,” he said.

Hinshelwood feels sometimes his team didn’t earn the results that perhaps their performances deserved.

When asked to recall his high point of the season, he cited a game that took place over the Christmas period.

“Our performance at Lancing was the best I have seen from a county one side, but we ended up drawing the game which I guess sums us up,” he said.

For Selsey’s man in charge, picking a low point of the season was an easy question to answer.

“The lowest points were obviously the two broken legs that we suffered. I don’t like to see it and both were from nasty tackles as well, which made it that much harder to take”.

These heartbreaking injuries - suffered by Omar Bugiel and Callum Britton - that Hinshelwood refers to in his summing-up of the 2012/13 campaign.

“We often showed promise but it was just so frustrating we couldn’t get our best team out on a regular basis”.

Despite the previous season’s lowly league position, the aim for Selsey is very much one of drastic improvement.

Hinshelwood is urging his team to finish higher up the league and said “We are obviously looking to be pushing up the table next year.

“I don’t want to be in charge of a team fighting relegation year in and year out.”

On the transfer front, Hinshelwood is planning to be fairly active.

“I think we need to strengthen in certain areas - that is for sure - but we have players due to return from injury and young players that will have that little bit more experience so with one or two fresh faces it looks encouraging for next year.”
