George Gaskin’s stunning 25-yarder gave Mussels a tenth-minute lead and Shoreham then wasted several chances to get a second.

Richard Greenfield got through one-on-one but shot wide as Crowborough’s defence closed him down in the final minute. From that, the hosts got the ball forward and Jason Barton headed home at the back post to level – the third time in four matches Mussels have conceded in stoppage time.

Henry Muggeridge put Crows ahead on 110 minutes but Lee Denyer headed Shoreham level three minutes later.

Crowborough then struck twice in the last five minutes as Ross Treleaven scored from the penalty spot following a foul by keeper Nathan Stroomberg and Muggeridge added a fourth after he intercepted Ryan Storrie’s back pass.

Mussels boss Bryan O’Toole said: “We defended ever so well throughout the 90 minutes but we should have killed the game off with the chances we had.

“We did enough to win it and it should never have gone to extra-time.

“We’ve now conceded in injury-time in three of the last four matches and it’s something I’ve thought long and hard about.

“I don’t think it’s our concentation or anything like that, it just seems the rub of the green is going against as at the moment a little bit and that happens in football.”

Shoreham have now lost three of their last four matches and the Southern Combination League leaders, who have won 12 of their 13 league matches, travel to third-placed Eastbourne United on Saturday.

O’Toole said: “There’s no big emergency and no one is panicking.

“I know this dressing room has bundles of character and they’ll all stick together. This is a group of players who know what it takes to win things and we’ll approach Saturday just like any other game.

“We’ve got to go there, do a job and we’re confident going into it.”
