Sids sizzle to record win at Roffey

Following the loss of two points in division three of the Sussex League the previous week, Sidlesham were determined not to have a repeat performance at Roffey and from the start they attacked with determination.

After four minutes they were rewarded when Paul Barnes scored the opening goal, and for the next 30 minutes the Sids were encamped around the Roffey goalmouth. The keeper pulled off some fine saves and it came as a shock when Roffey, with their first attack, equalised on 37 minutes.

The Sids were stunned and became sloppy and Roffey were getting on top. On 45 minutes a long-range lob caught the Sids keeper off his line and the ball dropped behind him to give the home side a 2-1 lead at half-time.

The second half saw the Sids take control and on 55 minutes Dean Platt scored to bring the scores level.

The Sids continued to press and Roffey were finding it difficult to withstand the constant pressure and on 72 minutes Barnes scored his second to put the visitors ahead. Three minutes later following a push on a forward, Sids were awarded a penalty and Gary Jones stepped up to score.

This was a fine performance and the result was no more than Sidlesham – who go second –deserved. Bosses Malcolm Harwood and Tom Evans have made two new signings to add more depth to his squad.

SIDS: L Arnell, D Millins, A Carrigher, J Brown, G Jones, B McDuffie, K Hartley, A Hounsome, P Barnes, D Bassil, D Platt, R Mullens, H Low, D Craven.
