Town, who beat division-higher Horsham in the last round, found their trip to another higher-division club, Ashford United, just that little bit too tough.

Strikes from Paul Booth and Sebastian Schoburgh cancelled out Danny Gainsford’s goal for Town as they exited the competition.

Despite the defeat, Steyning boss Alan Skipper felt his side could take a number of positives from their run in the competition.

He said: “We can’t be too disappointed as the cup run has been amazing.

“We gave superb performances in every game, including Saturday.

“But we will take away some great memories that many at the club will cherish.

“We have faced Newhaven, Horsham and Pagham this season and I have to say, in my opinion, we faced a better quality of opposition in Ashford.

“With all said and done, we battled well in the game and created chances of our own.

“If it wasn’t for a classy save from their goalkeeper late on, it may well have been a different story.

“But, over the 90 minutes, Ashford were deserved winners and are a good side.”

Town found it tough going in the opening 30 minutes on the 3G surface against division-higher Southern Counties East Football League side Ashford.

United piled men forward and wasted an array of chances early on.

The hosts’ pressure was rewarded on 38 minutes when they took the lead.

Town failed to clear Ryan Palmer’s corner and the ball eventually fell to Booth, who curled an effort past Ben Rose.

Skipper’s side were much improved in the second half and were level on 62 minutes when Gainsford struck.

However, a mix-up at the back two minutes later allowed Ashford to take the lead for a second time as Schoburgh netted to end Town’s Vase adventure.

STEYNING TOWN: Rose; S.Skipper, Parsons, Elms; Finch, Gainsford, Dodd, Hartley, Clark; Knowles, Garnham. Subs: Levoi (Hartley), Peskett (Knowles), Assefi (Parsons), McMahon, Hare.
