Southdown Girls perform wonders in Futsal tournament

Southdown Girls U10s, bereft of football since before Christmas, took a team of only five players to the first day of the Sussex FA Development Futsal tournament at Southwick.

Sporting their new kit sponsored by Kiddi Caru and competing against five other teams from Sussex, Southdown performed wonders in winning all five games.

They started with a 6 nil thrashing of Rustington Raiders, four goals for Natasha Rothwell and two for Alisha Mainwaring. The second game against Newhaven ebbed and flowed with Southdown twice taking the lead through Rothwell and then Mainwaring only to be pegged back. However, they sealed the game with two late goals from Mainwaring.

The next game was against a very strong Mile Oak and it saw the only time that Southdown went behind in a game.

A fine save from Hannah Drage kept the deficit to one and the team kept pressing and were rewarded with an equaliser from the impressing Mainwaring who followed it with a second to secure the points. The fourth game against Crawley proved an easier affair with another three from Mainwaring, one from Rothwell and Gemma Hebditch finishing the scoring.

The final game against Cuckfield finished 4-0 with Mainwaring and Rothwell sharing the goals.

Special mention to Leonie Sargent who’s tireless running was a menace to all the other teams but player of the day was surely Mainwaring who drew plaudits from all the other managers.

The performance was even more remarkable when you consider that all the other teams had at least four or five subs to draw on in each game.

The five Southdown girls played every minute of every game.
