Brighton may have stumbled into the 4th round of the FA Cup on replays against Wrexham but who cares?
The in-form Seagulls should have little to fear from the visit of high-flying Newcastle who conceded five second half goals at Craven Cottage last weekend, although it should also be pointed out that they were very good in a one-sided first 45 minutes before the defence went AWOL in the second period.
Both clubs have vital league games in their respective divisions next week with Brighton visiting Crystal Palace and the Magpies travelling to Ewood Park, but I am convinced we will witness a full-blooded encounter at the Amex and the fact that the TV cameras are in attendance shows some consider an upset is very much in the offing.
The Seagulls are only two points from the play-off places after their excellent success at London Road and are now back into 12/1 from 25s for promotion at BetVictor. Gus Poyet’s side are 3/1 to progress to the 5th round of the Cup at the first time of asking with the Magpies 10/11 and the draw at 12/5.
Albion are 150/1 to win the trophy with the Geordies 14s behind 9/2 jt favs Chelsea and Spurs. Chelsea are looking for their third FA Cup in four years, but they face a difficult looking West-London Derby at Loftus Road against QPR on Saturday a game given added spice by the shenanigans during and after the Premier League encounter between the two clubs earlier in the season.
Will Buckley grabbed both goals against Posh and is 9/1 to net first with BetVictor and 3/1 to score at any time. The Magpies must do without their two most influential players in Demba Ba and Cheick Tiote, who are on African Cup of Nations duty, and Albion look overpriced at 3/1 whilst acknowledging that Gus Poyet would probably swop three points at Selhurst Park on Tuesday night (9/4) for a place in the 5th round of the FA Cup.
There are any number of fascinating 4th round ties: Southampton were quite dreadful against Leicester on Monday night and I fancy Millwall at the Lion’s Den and I think Swansea (15/8) will get at least a replay at the Reebok despite Bolton’s excellent win against Liverpool last weekend.
There are nine ties involving ten Championship teams in the 4th Round but how many will qualify for the 5th Round?
Under 5 11/8
Exactly 5 2/1
Over 5 15/8
