Spot of bother for Crawley Down Gatwick in FA Vase

A penalty shootout settled a rather dour FA Vase second qualifying round tie between Crawley Down Gatwick and Cobham at a damp and cold Haven Centre.

Both sides found it difficult in trying to get the upper hand with the Anvils unable to reproduce the style of play that has been their forte recently, thereby producing a first half of stalemate for both sides.

Perhaps that's not too surprising from the Anvils' point of view bearing in mind a workload of 11 matches since the season's start in September.

The first half was pretty even with the battle in midfield taking the headlines, on 26 minutes Anvils wideman Michael Wood was bought on to up the ante, but on 35 minutes the Anvils were rocked when the visitors' forward Wilson took advantage of a misplaced pass to rocket the ball past Anvils keeper Sam Smith

In the second half CDG quickly restored parity when on 47 minutes Ben Chowney took advantage of a defensive mistake to rifle home the equaliser.

From then on it was nip'n'tuck with both sides desperate not to make a slip and give the game away.

So to penalties with the visitors converting all five of theirs and the Anvils missing out on just one, so it ended 5-3 to Cobham and CDG wish them good luck in the next round.
