Charker said: “When you look back across the whole season overall I am fairly content with our final league position.

“For large parts of the season, and probably only up until a few weeks to a month ago, we were chasing a top six finish and if we had all of players available throughout I still believe we would have achieved that.

“We suffered badly with injuries, suspensions and player availability and if we hadn’t had this to contend with, who knows where we would have finished. When you look at our results against the top sides, it shows we could compete with them and give them a game but it wasn’t to be. When you factor in the resources we had available to us I think it’s a respectable finish to the season.

“It’s been a long season and we’ve come a long way as a group; I still believe we have progressed in many ways so the end to the season was a bit of a kick in the teeth as we didn’t win a game after the Crawley Down game and we were in touching distance from the top 6 to 8 for all of that time but didn’t take our opportunities when presented with them.

“We flew out of the traps in the first few weeks and when we found ourselves in sixth position early doors but the Christmas time was a bit of a turning point for us as the injuries and suspensions to some key players started to kick in and hurt us more than we realised at the time.

“The positive to that is it allowed us to bring through some of the under 18s players who have had a really successful season and we have been able to identify some real talent for the club in the future which could be in our plans as early as next season.

“A 13th finish for a club of this size and stature is probably successful in many people’s eyes, but I am ambitious and want us to kick on as a club. It’s a well-deserved break now for everyone involved before the madness of the summer merry-go-round begins so it’s feet up for a few weeks and we go again.

“I think we will be a very different side next year in terms of personnel both on and off the pitch for various reasons and in a funny kind of way maybe that’s what the club needs in order to move forward again, I’m looking forward to next season as we have big plans on the horizon.”
