Steyning encouraged in cup exit at high-flying Newhaven

Ebou Jallow gave the hosts the lead in the third-round clash on 14 minutes before Rob Clark levelled on the half-hour mark.

Town then suffered late heartbreak as Ryan Knight netted just four minutes from the end to send Newhaven through.

Town boss Alan Skipper said: “There was such encouragement from a superb performance whilst getting beat.

“We felt if we got the tactics and system right they could try and break us down but they didn’t succeed on too many occasions. To be fair they are a very decent side indeed and a pleasure to watch and play against.

“No excuses but we had 10 players out and was still able to field a decent side who were awesome in all areas on the night. Our lads deserved more out of the 90 minutes. Up until then we match them in all departments and I felt we had the clearer cut chances. The result could have easily gone the other way.”
