Steyning take chances to seal only a fourth win of the year and move clear

Steyning pulled clear of danger with an impressive 2-0 victory over Little Common.

Craig Knowles finally sealed only Town’s fourth win of the season in the 89th minutes, atoning for an earlier penalty miss after Dave Harris had given the hosts a first-half lead.

Boss Richard Whitington said: “We’ve been on good form of late and now we’re starting to get the results our performances have warranted. We should have won last week against Southwick but this week we took our chances and got the result.”

Harris gave the hosts the lead on 33 minutes, but things would have been more comfortable had Knowles not hit the post from the penalty spot.

Phil Williamson had a goal-bound shot blocked, and late into the second half he also struck the woodwork.

But from Tyler Leggett’s pass Knowles beat a defender and calmly slotted home to secure Steyning an important three points.

“Alex Gathern threw up at half time as he was ill but he was probably our best defender,” Whitington said.

Town: Evans; Mills, Parsons, McMann, Hourigan, Gathern, Page, Knowles, Williamson, Harris, Aslan (Leggett 70).
