The experienced midfielder took charge along with Cliff Cant for the first time in their last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Hastings last night.

The pair are currently in the hot seat until the Hornets announce a permanent successor to Gary Charman, but have thrown their hats in the ring for the full-time role.

Storey said: “Me and Cliff would love it until the season of the season to show what we can do. I was very, very lucky to get Cliff in to give me a hand and we want to try and take things forwards.

“There is no manager and assistant, we are doing it together and we want to show what we can do.

“The first thing for the club and players is to get some belief and build on things to get some results, that’s the most important thing.

“It’s down to the club at the end of the day to make those decisions. We are here for the club and we want to get them out of trouble.”

The temporary manager was frustrated the side had nothing to show for their efforts as Evan Archibald netted an injury-time winner for Hastings on Wednesday night.

After a fairly even first half, the visitors came out the stronger in the second and took the lead through Sam Adams.

Tony Nwachukwu equalised from the penalty spot with 12 minutes left and Horsham looked likely to be the only winners until the late goal.

Storey said: “We just went really flat and lost our shape at the beginning of the second half. It’s important that we play our way up the field and the result was frustrating for everyone.

“We lost our way and the shape that we tried to play and it’s a real shame that that 20 minutes killed us. We made a couple of changes and tried to bring some energy in and it worked, but we couldn’t get that second goal.

“Richie Welch made good debut and George Blandford made a real difference when he came on and got the ball wide. I have had four days of solid work trying to get players in, speaking to managers and I have tried to strengthen things.

“Personally, I think we looked stronger and hopefully we can build and push on. It’s nice to put in good performances, but it’s the three points that are important to us, not playing well.

“The two centre-halves, Calum Sheriff and Tom Hughes, before he went off with cramp, I thought were exceptional. They dealt with their two forwards very well and they are no mugs, Ade Olorunda and Kenny Pogue are good players and have both been around the block.

“I thought they all did well. Oli Lockyer was showing he is a great signing and Greg Berry looked good despite not playing a lot of senior football.”
