Ethan Strevett struck twice and Andy Atkin bagged the other, but Rye made hard work of setting up another home tie against Oakwood in the next stage of a competition they won in 2012.

Strevett gave Sussex County Football League Division One side Rye a ninth minute lead when he buried a low drive across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner after Evan Archibald flicked on Liam Upton’s left wing cross.

Only a combination of the offside flag and missed chances prevented Rye being further ahead at the break. Atkin glanced home a Ben Billings free kick only to be flagged offside, while Atkin and Gregg Berry were denied by Uckfield goalkeeper Tom Callingham when one-on-one.

Rye finally doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Atkin headed Berry’s right wing cross into the bottom corner, but spirited Division Two outfit Uckfield hit back two minutes later as Aaron Capon ran through and slotted past Rye goalkeeper Yarney Camara.

Ben Radley had a shot blocked on the line as Uckfield somehow survived a goalmouth scramble before Rye eventually made the game safe in the 81st minute. Berry went down under the challenge of Carl Kenwood and although Strevett’s resulting penalty was saved, he recovered to slam home the rebound with his left foot.

Rye: Camara, Masters, Billings, Alexander, Radley, Atkin, Storey, Strevett, Archibald, Berry (Gould 82), Upton (Lockyer 69). Subs not used: Cooper, Hales.
