Last season’s 17-goal leading scorer left the U’s for Eastbourne Town in pre-season, but was back at The Pilot Field watching United’s game against Hythe Town on Monday.

Speaking this morning (Thursday), United assistant manager Ben White said: “We found out through a third party that he was unhappy at Eastbourne Town and we put a seven-day letter in for him.

“The last three or four games we’ve been a little bit light in terms of forwards and having spoken to him today, he’s making the right noises in terms of wanting to get back to his best.

“He appreciates there’s going to be competition for places and he’s happy to fight for his place. I think he’s got a little bit to go in terms of fitness from where he was last year, but if we can get him fit, we’ve got a decent Ryman South forward on our hands. I believe he’s going to train tonight.”

Pogue is the joint leading scorer in Sussex Division One so far this season with five goals in four games. The striker would be cup-tied for United’s FA Cup preliminary round tie away to Eastbourne United AFC on Saturday, but could play in the league match away to East Grinstead Town next Tuesday.

“If you’re going to be successful in any league you need to have forwards that are going to score goals,” continued White. “If you can get four or five - which I feel we’ve got now - you think that will be enough firepower for us to mount the challenge that we keep talking about.”

White says that United are always looking to improve the squad and one or two potential new additions with higher level experience are expected to attend training.
