The midfielder found the bottom corner of the AFC Croydon Athletic net from 25 yards to give the Dragons victory over the nine-man Rams, who play at a higher level than their Crabtree Park hosts.

Victory tees up a home game against another Southern Counties League side in Saltdean United next month.

‘I was happy with the way I controlled the ball as it fell to me when they failed to clear a corner,’ said Murfin. ‘I knew it was going in as soon as I hit it. Some of my teammates jumped on me as we celebrated and that’s when I suffered the injury and had to leave the pitch.’

Dan Simmonds swept Wick into a 19th minute lead with a lovely finish for his third goal of the season before the Rams equalised just before the break when Luwayen Greenwood bundled in a deflected corner at the far post.

Simmonds fired wide from the penalty spot after Kazeem Richards was sent off for handling his 51st minute shot as it headed towards the empty net and he and Alex Kew were both twice denied by agile saves.

AFC Croydon Athletic were reduced to nine men after tempers were briefly raised and Dragons joint manager Tom Simmonds said: ‘We are hoping scans show the damage to Scott’s knee isn’t too serious.

"We look forward to building on two straight wins when we go to Roffey on Saturday before another Southern Combination League Division One match at home to Selsey on Tuesday."
