Super Saunders turns team into Bourne winners

Bourne Sports won the Saywell International Arun and Chichester Challenge Cup with a one-goal victory over Worthing United Youth.

Bourne’s route to the final involved victories over Rustington Otters Youth, Bognor Regis Town, Barnham Trojans and Whyke United in a run that never looked in trouble until a tight final played at Arundel.

In the first half a strong defensive display from Luke Atkinson and Patrick Saunders ensured it stayed goalless.

In the second, Bourne come out fighting and a great move down the right saw George Briance and Alfie Ruston put Jacob Turnbull through on goal. His finish was off-target. Chyan Francisco had a good chance after good work from Luke Jarvis but the ball bobbled.

Bourne’s full-backs started to push on and Jack Brew went close with a strike following good work by Luke Haddow.

The winner was a great strike by Connor Saunders from just outside the box.

A superb display at sweeper by Connor Laycock ensured chances were kept to a minimum and in any case, keeper Aaron Hart was on his toes. A late chance for Isaac Brennan saw the keeper save well.

The players, coaches Rob Brew and Lee Saunders and their supporters were delighted with the win.

Predators 2 Worthing Strikers 0

Predators recorded their tenth win of the season but it was no walkover against the team at the bottom of the league.

Predators dominated the first half, going close a few times.

In the second half, Strikers came out with more attacking intent and it was end-to-end stuff before a great overhead goal from Remnant was followed quickly by a goal from Edwards, who was set up by Ellis, playing his first game. Man of the match was Mackay.

UNDER-16

Northchapel Colts 4 Pagham Youth 1

Northchapel returned to winning form after two consecutive defeats.

Archie Challen got all four goals from close range and, although Pagham pulled back a consolation goal in the second half, the result was never in doubt.

Man of the match was Elliott Thornley.

Walberton Wasps 1 Felpham Colts 3

Felpham dominated the early exchanges but failed to convert any chances.

Harry Riseborough put Will Green through on goal, only for the keeper to block with his legs, and later with the goalkeeper out of position, Peter Nicholls’ long-range effort was inches wide.

Wasps were indebted to their keeper again as he made a smart save to tip another shot around the post.

As Wasps kicked off after the break, Riseborough stole possession to enable Nicholls to put Colts 1-0 up – but from the restart Wasps equalised.

In the second half Colts looked the likely winners.

Green restored their advantage but the Wasps keeper continued to keep them in the game.

With time running out, Riseborough’s persistence in front of goal paid off as the ball rebounded up off the keeper and he headed the ball home.

Regis 2000 3 Pagham Youth 2

The first half saw Pagham dominate as Regis struggled to get into the game.

They deservedly took the lead on 15 minutes and could have had a second soon after. Five minutes before half-time Regis equalised through a Ryan Barratt header from a Jordan Charles cross.

Early in the second half, Barratt was sent off for two bookable offences. But the ten men were awarded a penalty after Dan Watson was fouled in the area. Johan VanDriel coolly scored from the spot.

A few minutes later they scored a third with Michael Charman running clear of the visitors’ defence before shooting across the keeper into the net.

Five minutes from the end Pagham were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Curtis Poole. Regis frantically saw out the remaining minutes to claim victory.

Pagham Youth 1 Worthing Minors 1

Pagham started the brightest with Misselbrook and Rodway giving the Worthing keeper shots to save.

Worthing took the lead on 61 minutes, their striker lobbing Hambidge.

Pagham came straight back at Worthing and forced a corner. Rodway swung the ball towards the goal with Conlon shooting and the ball deflecting to Knight, who buried it in the bottom corner. The whole team were Pagham’s men of the match.

Bosham 1 Worthing Rebels 0

In this bottom-of-the-table clash, both sides needed to win. Bosham, with an attacking 4-3-3 formation, caused problems down the left for the Rebels with Charlie Tyrell turning their defence inside out.

The Rebels were snuffed out by Rayan Osman, a colossus in defence.

Harry Harding replaced Steve McFarlane and put Bosham ahead.

Jamie Binyon, Josh Lynch and George Sabini were all strong.

Bosham have now done the double over Rebels this season. Man of the match was Osman.

UNDER-12

Predators Youth 2 Barnham Trojans B 0

Both sides went at it hammer and tongs in a bruising encounter.

Barnham were unlucky to find Connor Fellows in good form in the Predators goal and with Connor McCabe and Jacob Hanslip both making crucial last-ditch tackles, Predators survived intact.

In the second half Predators took the lead from a Harvey Clarke free-kick fired into the top corner. Jordon Smith’s goal made the game safe.
