Super Sids hit six - and Lavant are promoted

After a defeat to Saltdean in the Intermediate Cup, the Sids looked for an improvement – and found it.

On 19 minutes John Philips connected with a ball in and scored a brilliant opening goal.

Sids seemed to take their foot off the gas and Clymping drew level. This made the Sids take the game to the opposition and convert two more chances, one by Dan Bassil and the other giving Philips his second. The second half was delayed by a fracas in the changing rooms dealt with by the two managers.

Sids had another three goals by Bassil to thank for the eventual scoreline.

Holbrook 0 Lavant 0

Division one

This goalless draw between third-placed Holbrook and leaders Lavant ensured the visitors’ promotion to the premier division next season.

One point for Lavant guaranteed it – though they could have taken all three but for Holbrook keeper Adam Kollar.

Lavant’s Ryan Seacombe twice went close before Lavant keeper Neil Sanson saved Holbrook’s only serious attempt on goal.

Lavant were forced into changes through injuries and Sanson had to pluck the ball off Ben Millman’s toe from a Steve Buck cross, but Lavant created chances from counter-attacks.

Lavant’s aim now is to lift the division-one title.

Petworth 4 Newtown Villa Res 3

Division one

Petworth grabbed a nervy win against fellow strugglers Newtown Villa.

Adie Konieczny has been brought back in by Petworth chairman Graham Stanton to try to help the team avoid the drop out of senior football.

Petworth lost two defenders hours before kick-off through illness.

Newtown first-team regular Matt Robb bossed the midfield in the first half.

Jaysi Wells was brought down in the area after a neat one-two with the lively Martin Dillon. Quinn Murray’s tame penalty was easily saved.

Then Murray’s tackle on a Newtown Villa player on the edge of the area sent the ball past advancing keeper Alex Wadey into his own goal.

On the hour top scorer Rob Levett fired a shot into the far corner and soon the impressive John Pafford hit a brilliant half-volley into the top corner.

Newtown had their captain sent off for a second yellow, then Levett made it 3-1 and Warren 4-1.

Dreadful defending gave Newtown a lifeline as Dan Naldrett conceded a penalty then a dangerous cross was nodded in at the far post.

University of Chi 4 Cowfold 2

Malcolm Simmonds Cup

The University’s only hope of silverware comes in this cup and that was evident as they turned in their best show of the season at College Lane.

Cowfold took a fourth-minute lead but a Danny Watts free-kick levelled just before half-time.

Captain Kenneth Hagan rose hight to head in the Uni’s second and James Sandford converted a cross with a volley. The game was back in the balance when a Cowfold got a contentious second. But Hagan added a fourth in the dying minutes.

Ovingdean 1 Wittering Utd 2

Sussex Junior Cup semi-final

Wittering Utd are in the final of the Cobra Sussex Junior Cup after their 20th straight win.

On the half-hour a low cross from Tom Kelly was turned in from close range by skipper Barry McCoy.

Before half-time, Alan Sheppard made it 2-0 with a speculative effort from 40 yards.

With five minutes left Wittering gifted Ovingdean a corner. Wittering’s defence were unable to clear the ball and conceded from close range.

But they held on for a place in the April 10 final.
