Super students notch double win for Chichester

Chichester’s first team were not intimidated by playing against one of the world’s leading universities.

They pressed high and hard from start to finish, producing many chances.

Alex Collard, the man of the match, was a rock at the back for Chichester but was also unmarkable when attacking set-pieces. He gave Chichester the lead in the opening 15 minutes from a well-taken corner by Dan Kempson.

Chichester grew in confidence and at times Cambridge couldn’t deal with the speed of play from the West Sussex side.

The only criticism from Chi manager Danny Potter was the lack of goals scored. “We created so many chances and looked a threat going forward every time, but we didn’t put ourselves in a more comfortable position by scoring more goals,” he said.

“We ended up relying on our defence to keep Cambridge at bay with Alex Collard and Dan Miller both having outstanding performances preventing Cambridge having any clear-cut chances”.

Chichester made it two wins from two with a well-deserved victory against Bath in the BUCS national premier south division.

Chichester started to get on top very early and their dominance was rewarded with a well-taken goal by last season’s top goalscorer George Landais. He finished from ten yards after a set play.

At the interval Chichester were forced to substitute the influential Dan Kempson because of a knock. Harri Nourse took his place and immediately made an impact winning a corner.

Tom Bold’s delivery was not cleared by Bath and Alex Ansa put Chichester 2-0 up from just inside the six-yard box.

Bath failed to create any clear-cut chances and again the Chichester defence looked comfortable. Jamie Blackburn, man of the match, started to control things for Chichester in the centre dictating play and breaking up Bath’s attacks.

Chichester went 3-0 ahead when a 35-yard free kick from Bold was headed in by Pearce Farren with 20 minutes to go.

Skipper Bold said: “We fully deserved the win, the lads were great. We controlled the game from start to finish and we always look a threat going forward. We can’t get carried away, as we know that this is a tough division, but it’s a great start to the season with two wins from two.”

Chichester go to Exeter University next Wednesday (Nov 5) and host the University of South Wales on November 12 on the top pitch on the Bishop Otter Campus (2pm )
