Town went into the game on the back of scoring 14 goals in their previous two games but Nathan Hull’s brace and a strike from Matthew Gates helped Lingfield to a comprehensive 3-0 success at The Shooting Field.

Town’s task was always going to be tricky after Chad Milner was shown a straight red card on 18 minutes for a dangerous challenge.

Steyning boss Gerry Murphy felt his dismissal was a defining factor and said: “It was disappointing to lose having performed very well in our past couple of games.

“Going down to ten men after having Chad sent-off on 18 minutes didn’t help either.

“Lingfield did play very well and I think they will be up there come the end of the season.

“We now have a chance to bounce back on Saturday with a home game against Oakwood, it is going to be another tough game but one we will look forward to.”

Neither side created any decent openings early on before Steyning were reduced to ten men.

Milner went in for a challenge, which was deemed too dangerous by the referee, and he received his marching orders.

Town stood firm for the remainder of the first half, before Lingfield took the lead ten minutes after half-time.

Gates was the man to fire his side ahead with Lingfield then kicking on in the closing stages.

Hull’s strike ten minutes from time doubled Lingfield’s lead, he then netted once again four minutes later as his side sealed an away victory.

Steyning drop a place to third in the table following Little Common securing a victory at Southwick.

But Murphy is not too concerned with his side’s position at presen and said: “At the moment we are sitting third in the league at the halfway stage, so we just need to worry about what we do and how to strengthen the squad in the next couple of months as we move ahead into the second part of the season.”

STEYNING: Rose; Greer, Wadey, Levoi, Finch, Faber, Hartley, Clark, Milner, Romain, Knowles. Subs: Pickford, Webb.
