Terrific win puts Rye top

Rye United went top of the Sussex County Football League courtesy of a 2-1 win at East Grinstead Town.

Unlike in their previous two Division One matches, Rye got off to a fast start with Matt Maclean and Sam Adams putting them two-up in the first 20 minutes.

Grinstead pulled one back right on half time, but despite having the bulk of the possession in second 45 minutes, didn’t really trouble Josh Pelling in the Rye goal.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Sidley United were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 5-1 after extra-time in their extra preliminary round replay against Arundel.

Sidley went ahead in the first couple of minutes through a Paul Tuppenney free kick and felt they were in control during the first half, but Arundel levelled in the second and struck four more times during the extra half-hour.

Little Common achieved their first win in Division Two with a come-from-behind 3-1 success away to Eastbourne United AFC. Callum Wooller and Jamie Crone struck late in the first half, and a late Wooller penalty made sure.

Full reports on each of these matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
