‘They deserved to win’ admits Munday

Common edged out Bexhill 4-3 in an entertaining Macron Store Sussex County Football League Peter Bentley League Cup first round tie thanks to a late winner from Lewis Hole.

Munday said: “I would’ve said they were the better side and deserved the win overall, but we had a 10-minute spell at the start where we’ve gone in front and we probably had a 15-minute spell at the start of the second half where we were on top.

“To be honest it was what I thought. I said before there would be goals and it would be entertaining. I can’t really moan at scoring three goals, but if you concede four you deserve to lose.”

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge felt his side produced a much better performance than in the previous weekend’s league defeat away to Worthing United.

He said: “We’re pleased with the result. It was good to get into the next round, and after the start we had the previous week the attitude, desire, commitment and workrate of the boys was exceptional. We had that sharpness about us.

“I think we edged it. I think first half we were a little bit slow to get going, but controlled the game for the rest of the half. We started the second half a little bit slow and conceded two goals to go 3-2 down, but showed that character to come back. I’m sure it was a good game for the neutrals, if not for the managers.”

Munday was pleased to have competed well with a Common side which has finished in Division Two’s top four for the last two seasons, yet disappointed with his team’s display.

“If that’s the level, I don’t think we’re too far away,” continued Munday. “We couldn’t have played much worse really. They’re a team and they know each other, whereas we’re a new outfit.

“As a team we weren’t good enough defensively. We scored goals, but as a whole we weren’t good enough. I know what we can do and we’ve not shown it there.”
