The Westies came from behind to win 3-1 at home to Clymping in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division Two (formerly Sussex Division Three) on Saturday.

“It wasn’t a pretty start,” said Westfield manager Jethro Warren. “It was a bit of a scrappy affair, but three points is all you want out of your first game - you’re not too bothered how you get it.

“We were by far the better side and we should’ve had seven or eight. We hit the post, we hit the bar and their ‘keeper made some good saves. We looked a little bit rusty and we were a bit nervous when we went 1-0 down, but as soon as we got it back to 1-1 we were fine.”

Westfield’s line-up contained a few familiar faces in Ashley Paine, Ross Williams and Matt Dadswell, plus a number of new names such as Mike Benton, Lewis Finch and Zac Hurst. David Miller and Alan Johnson also returned to the first team fold having previously been running the reserves.

Clymping drew first blood through Harry Potts after a long ball bounced over the head of Williams.

Westfield got back on terms shortly before half time. A corner was headed out to the edge of the box where Finch took one touch to control before volleying into the bottom corner for a debut goal.

Westfield again had most of the play in the second half and Paine put them ahead by heading home from a Khaya Nyathi corner. Westfield sealed the points with a third goal in the final 10 minutes, Dadswell slotting home at the end of a move which stemmed from a Clymping corner.

Westfield: Rogers; Benton, Paine, Williams, Miller; Finch, Ward, Hurst; Dadswell, Nyathi, Whiteman. Subs: Stonham, Johnson, Easton, Durrant, Lelliot.
