Following a 4-1 win at home to Hailsham on Saturday, Mullets beat Pagham on Monday and boss Brett Torode said: “It’s a pleasing start but I’ve known all along that we’ve got good players.

“Everybody thought that when we lost Mike Huckett that that’s it for Arundel, but we signed Liam O’Connor, Jerry Manning and Adam Bibb, so we’ve got plenty of cover in that area and have a big squad.”

Arundel got the only goal after just seven minutes on Monday when Scott Tipper headed home Dan Gibb’s left-wing cross from six yards.

Tipper twice went close to a second, while Arundel then dealt well with plenty of Pagham crosses into the penalty area.

Torode added: “I can’t really remember our keeper James Fernandes having a save to make. They put a lot of crosses into our box but we defended well and that’s something we’ve improved on.

“I think it would have been a game we’d have lost this time last year as we struggled to deal with crosses last season.”

Arundel travel to Oakwood in the Sussex RUR Cup on Saturday, before they host Westfield in the John O’Hara Cup on Tuesday.
