On a mud bath of a pitch at Mill Road, Town twice came from behind and recorded a vital victory thanks to goals from Aaron Capon, Jason Taylor and Wes Tate.

The win puts them top on 71 points from 28 games, one point above Horsham who have played 29.

Title rivals Horsham were also in action on Tuesday night and they were beaten 1-0 at Broadbridge Heath and also had key player Joe Shelley dismissed for dissent.

It was Horsham’s second successive defeat having lost 5-4 to Eastbourne Town on a crazy afternoon at Gorings Mead last Saturday.

Lambert said, “To be honest I was worried about the Arundel match. I wasn’t sure how much the Horsham game took out of the lads.

“At Horsham the atmosphere was great but on Tuesday it was pretty miserable. The pitch was awful and I wondered if the lads would be up for it.

“But once again they showed their character and will to win.

“It was a very tough game and I was pleased to come away with the three points and now we move on to the next one.”

Arundel took the lead through Josh Biggs on 37 minutes but Aaron Capon hit back for Town.

The hosts took the lead once more just after the break thanks to a strike from Dave Herbert. Jason Taylor, who is still finding his peak fitness following a hamstring injury, levelled once more for Town and it left to Tate to seal the deal with just eight minutes remaining.

Lambert, a former defender added, “We cannot keep giving ourselves mountains to climb. We keep switching off at set pieces and conceding stupid goal and we have to improve on that. There will come a time when it catches us out we can’t keep relying on ourselves to fight back all the time.

“We are doing it the hard way at the moment, we are getting the wins but it’s not good for the old ticker.”
