The U’s won 6-0 at home to neighbours Westfield, from the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League, on Tuesday night.

United manager Darren Hare said: “I thought they did extremely well, worked ever so hard and made it difficult for us.

“I think at times we gave the ball away a little bit sloppily, but we worked extremely hard to win the ball back and forced errors out of them.

“I thought we huffed and puffed a little bit first half. We were a bit better second half, kept the ball a bit better and there were some good goals.”

Goals from Steve Watt, Jack Harris and Sam Cole put United 3-0 up at half time before Richard Davies (penalty), Harris and Wayne Wilson completed the scoring. Hare was pleased with youngsters Ollie Black and Bradley Pritchard after they came on.

United will contest their seventh and final pre-season game at home to a Havant & Waterlooville XI on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

“Saturday will be a really good test for us and that will set us up nicely,” continued Hare, who will treat the game as close as he can to a competitive match. “We’ll be looking to keep players on the pitch for a long period of time.”

Simon Johnson is doubtful as he rests a sore Achilles, while Frannie Collin’s hamstring is much better and the striker is expected to train twice next week. Bright Temba is touch and go for the start of the league campaign next weekend.

Ryan Nicholls, who played in goal against Westfield, will transfer from Chatham Town to provide cover for Lenny Pidgeley.

Richie Welch, who Hare says has done ‘fantastically well’, is likely to dual register with another club, possibly AFC Uckfield Town.
