Unlucky Peacehaven go out of Sussex Senior Cup to Ryman Premier Hastings thanks to cruel late extra time goal

Peacehaven were extremely unlucky to go out of the Sussex Senior Cup 2-1 at the hands of Hastings United tonight – after taking the lead against the Ryman Premier outfit and pushing the U’s all the way to the very end of extra time before conceding the losing goal.

The Tye took the lead through Ashley Rees on 24 minutes. Rob O’Toole released Rees with a cushioned volley and the striker finished well with a superb lob over Daniel East.

Peacehaven could have doubled their lead but O’Toole was denied by a brilliant save by East, with Rees then skying the rebound.

It came as something of a shock when Hastings equalised just before the break, Zac Attwood curling a beautiful 25 yard free kick into the net.

Indeed, Hastings United’s own excellent official Twitter feed proclaimed the half time score as “an absolute travesty from Peacehaven’s point of view. The hosts have been truly outstanding, except in front of goal maybe.”

A goalless second half saw the game go into extra time, where Peacehaven were cruelly denied by a 119th minute winner from Danny Ellis. The Hastings man seized on a stray pass to beat Joe Adams from 18 yards.

There was still time for the Arrows player/boss Sean Ray to be sent off for an off-the-ball incident spotted by one of the assistants.

Peacehaven tweeted after the match: “Very unlucky to lose 2-1 in the dying moments. But if we are lucky enough to be promoted it bodes very well. Well done boys.”

Hastings now take on Crawley Town in the next round. The League One outfit also narrowly edged past a local county league side in this competition tonight when beating Newhaven 1-0 at Fort Road.
