UPDATE: West Sussex sport hit by weather - but Chichester 10k is on

The weather has wiped out most of West Sussex's sporting programme - but Sunday's Chichester Priory 10k is on after the area escaped the worst of the weather affecting other parts of the country.

10k organisers said there had been rain overnight with a slight coating of snow on grass, particularly on higher ground.

“Road surfaces are clear of snow but there are patches of slush at the edges in the rural part of the course, and some standing water from the rain. The temperature is two degrees C,” they added.

That blew away any fears the race could have been cancelled because of snow or rain.

We will have a report on the 10k here later today.

It has been a different story for other sport.

There were many football matches off across Sussex - although Brighton’s Championship clash with Leicester survived. They won 1-0 thanks to a late goal by Will Buckley in a game of three red cards.

The Rocks’ visit to Eastbourne Town in Ryman one south was called off after a 10am inspection.

Selsey’s home game with East Grinstead and Midhurst’s Rotherfield game against Eastbourne United had been called off by Friday night.

A pitch inspection at Chichester City on Saturday morning had the same outcome, with their game against Hassocks postponed because of a rock-hard pitch. Pagham were the last local side to be stood down, with their visit to Lancing only ruled out around Saturday lunchtime.

Bosham were spared a trip to Broadbridge Heath by an early decision to postpone their Sussex League division-three game. Barnham’s home cup clash with Lancing Reserves was also off.

But there was some sporting action locally - Chichester RFC’s London one south clash with Basingstoke went ahead after an 11.30am check and they were glad it did, recording a 15-14 win to keep their lead at the top of the division.

Elsewhere on the local rugby scene, Bognor’s game at Wimbledon was also frozen off, as was Midhurst’s match.

Fontwell were due to race on Sunday afternoon but brought forward an inspection from Saturday afternoon to the morning and decided there was no way they would race.
