Upton double puts Rye into final

Two tremendous second half goals from Liam Upton fired Rye United into the John O’Hara League Cup final.

Upton’s double blast turned a 1-0 half time deficit into a 2-1 victory against lower grade Rustington at Peacehaven & Telscombe FC on Tuesday night.

Rye fell behind to a marvellous free kick by Chris Darwin in the 21st minute and could have been further adrift at half time as Steve Kirkham hit the post and Darwin struck the crossbar.

But Upton equalised in the third minute of the second period with a strike from around 30 yards and won it in the 74th minute from even further out.

Sussex County League Division One high-flyers Rye will face one of their title rivals in the final on Good Friday April 22. Crawley Down and Three Bridges meet in the second semi-final on Wednesday night.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Bexhill United set up a Hastings & District FA Senior Cup final against Sidley United with a 2-1 win over Little Common at The Polegrove.

Linton Rogers put Bexhill ahead in an all-Sussex Division Two tie and although Lewis Hole equalised, Andy Atkin popped up with the winner.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
