U’s recover to clinch key victory

Hastings United picked up a vital victory in their battle against relegation today (Saturday).

The U’s are now four points above the bottom four in the Ryman Football League Premier Division after coming from behind to win 2-1 at bottom club Horsham.

United got off to the worst possible start when Calum McGeehan put Horsham in front following a third minute corner, but the visitors began to get well on top half as the first half progressed.

While United goalkeeper Matt Armstrong-Ford pulled off one good save, his opposite number denied Josh Jirbandey and Jack Dixon, and Zac Attwood, Tamer Tuna and Ben Davisson spurned decent chances.

United finally equalised after half-an-hour through Tuna after good work by Attwood and Tuna went from scorer to provider by teeing up Danny Ellis for what turned out to be the winner in the 44th minute.

The second half was less eventful than the first in continuous rain, but United did enough to clinch a much-needed victory even if they made harder work of it than they would have liked.

United: Armstrong-Ford, Dixon, Whitehead, Carey, Ray, Jirbandey, Ellis, Gonsalves, Tuna, Attwood, Davisson. Subs: Manning, Sutton, Barham, Willer.

A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.
