Video: Bexhill go to remarkable lengths to get game played

Bexhill United Football Club manager Marc Munday revealed that he and his players went to remarkable lengths to get Saturday's game played.

The club even used a blowtorch to help break up the ice on The Polegrove pitch so that the Macron Store Southern Combination Division One match against Lingfield could go ahead.

Speaking after the game, Munday said: “I was down here about 10 to 11. The sun was coming out, but there was a big sheet of ice on the right-hand side.

“Myself and my son were down here smashing up the ice, and I put a call in to a few of the boys and said ‘if you want a game today, come down here with me’.

“Within an hour I had about six of the players down here forking it and smashing it. I even had the club captain (Jack Aston) with his roofing blowtorch burning ice off the pitch.

“With a lot of the teams not playing today, especially locally, we saw it as a great opportunity to have a good gate - which it looked like we did - and we needed a game as well.”

Bexhill’s efforts were rewarded with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over a Lingfield side which had a player sent-off shortly before half time. Munday himself scored the winner with an added time header.

“We got the game on and it was worth all the hard work,” continued Munday, whose side kept its first clean sheet since the opening week of the season. “I’m just pleased with the performance and pleased with the clean sheet.

“I don’t like it when a team goes down to 10 men because it’s usually detrimental to you because they (the opposition) seem to up their game and work harder.

“We just bided our time in the second half. We looked comfortable and we were waiting for that opportunity, which we got at the end. It came in the last knockings and I’m pleased to score it, but I’m more pleased for the side to have a 1-0 win.”
