He was presented with a special medal celebrating 50 years service to Sussex football before the game between his current side and his previous one, Horsham on Saturday by Sussex FA representative David Nessling.

Maggs thanked all those who have helped him in his career, including his family. He said: “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of a lot of people including my wife and children and the general public, people I’ve worked with who have made my life easier.

“In 50 years there have been so many highlights. 37 years at Crawley Town was my life really and then I had 11 wonderful, years plus at Horsham and now two good years at Crawley Down. It’s been a roller-coaster for me - there’s been so many good days, a few bad days.

“My highlight as a manager was at Horsham becaause we had lots and lots of success including two promotions and various cups highlighted by the FA Cup. You’ll never take those away from me. They are probably the highlights of my career.”

Maggs added Horsham did enough to beat his side on Saturday in what ended up a 1-1 draw.

He said: “They came and did a job on us and probably did enough to win the game. Taking nothing away from them we can play a lot better with the calibre of players we’ve got. I’m disappointed in that respect today.”
