The Blues hero stepped into the role after Michael Appleton’s Blackpool departure yesterday.

Whittingham’s first task is to prepare the side for their League One trip to Bury on Saturday.

It’s not the first time the former Pompey striker has taken the managerial reins on a temporary basis at Fratton Park.

Last season he shared the duties with Stuart Gray following Steve Cotterill’s move to Nottingham Forest.
