Have you ever thought of becoming a coach for your son or daughter's football team? Maybe you've even thought about refereeing?

Now’s your chance to get involved in grass-roots football as the Sussex FA are hosting a number of local courses in the new year.

Level one coaching, Arun Leisure Centre, Bognor, price £145.

A 3.5-day course aimed at those looking to become an assistant coach and developing a basic understanding of safe, ethical and effective coaching methods for young people. Ideally suited to those working with groups of youth players. Includes a three-hour safeguarding children workshop.

Dates: April 14, 15 (9am-5pm), April 18 (6.45pm-9.45pm), April 21 (9am-5pm, final assessment). Contact Stephen Phythian (01903 766855).

Youth award module one, Developing the Environment, Arun Leisure Centre, £145.

A new qualification, the first of three parts, designed to support coaches working with young players. Covers technical development and offers fundamental ideas for the coach to use for the development of football specific movements.

Youth award module two, St Phillip Howard High School, Barnham, £165.

The second of the three youth award modules. Aimed at coaches looking to develop junior players, through improving a coach’s knowledge and confidence in developing and understanding practices.

Emergency aid, Felpham Community College, £25.

The FA emergency aid award is a three-hour workshop including basic first aid and CPR. A necessary pre-requisite for all FA coaching awards.

Dates: Feb 20 (6.45pm-9.45pm) or June 18 (6.45pm-9.45pm).

Safeguarding children, Arun Leisure Centre, £25.

A three-hour workshop aimed to encourage a safer environment for children in football. Explores what inappropriate and appropriate behaviour in football is, providing best-practice examples and how to tackle any concerns over a child’s welfare.

Refereeing, Arena Sport Centre, Bognor.

Provides participants an introduction to the laws of the game, as well as developing the practical skills required to become a football referee. To complete this course, six refereeing fixtures must be fulfilled plus two referee exams. Includes a safeguarding children workshop.
