Wason winner ensures everything goes to plan for Horsham YMCA at Hailsham

Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland saluted the hard work and discipline of his players after they overcame Hailsham 1-0 at the Beaconfield on Saturday.

Scott Wason’s strike midway through the first half was eventually enough to separate the two sides, although several missed second half chances from the visitors could have made for a more fruitful score line.

Boss Buckland commented: “I am really, really pleased. The game went exactly as planned. I said we would go down there and set up 4-5-1, control the game and come away with a win, and we have.

“And it could have been 3-0 had we of taken our other opportunities. It was a very, very good performance against a side that were fully up for it and fully stacked. I couldn’t pick a man of the match for us, as every single player was just so disciplined. We kept our shape superbly.”

YM frustrated the hosts with their regimented structure, and took the lead on twenty-three minutes when midfielder Wason clipped the ball past the Stringers’ ‘keeper at the second time of asking.

With Martin Smith, Leroy Hyett and Chris Williams all nursing injuries on Saturday, YM were without a striker in their squad, and so it was left up to Liam Hunter to take on an unfamiliar role up front.

The win means YM have now lost just one league game in their last eleven outings, and that form is something Buckland wants to continue until the end of the season.

YM (4-5-1): P. Williams, Sullivan, Crane, Burgess, Evans, Findlay, B. Curtis, Dugdale, O’Carroll, Wason (Cox 70), Hunter (Hawthorne 80).
