They came up against the only Southern Combination League Premier Division side with a 100 per cent record and Lancing kept it intact with a fifth successive win.

Butler was unhappy with the way his team played and said: “We just did not perform well enough.

“Two basic errors gifted them goals on what was a poor day from us.

“Full credit to Lancing, they came, played well and got the win. But we allowed them to play and, against a side who likes to play football, that is not good enough.

“It was a really disappointing showing and every one of the players could have performed a lot better but I’m hoping we can bounce back from this now.”

Lancers started on the front foot and went ahead on 15 minutes. The opener was a gift, too, after a mix-up in Arundel’s backline and Alex Fair pounced to make it 1-0.

There was nothing fortunate about the strike that made it two seven minutes later, though. Fair received a pass on the edge of the box, turned his marker and then fired into the top corner.

Lewis Finney went close to adding a third before the break, while Scott Tipper then went close to pulling one back for the home side.

Mullets performed a lot better in the second half but Lancing kept them at bay to secure another league win.

Arundel host Horsham on Saturday, then entertain Worthing United on Tuesday.
