Webster's goodbye message to Pompey fans

And the defender has told of his pride at helping Pompey on a path he is convinced will end with them reaching the English game’s second tier.

Webster’s move to Ipswich Town was confirmed last Friday, as he moved to Portman Road in a deal worth £700,000, with Matt Clarke moving in the other direction.

That brings an association with Pompey to a close which spans 11 years for the 21-year-old.

Webster made his league debut at the age of just 17 years and 11 days against West Ham in 2012.

The West Wittering talent went on to make 81 appearances and score five goals for the Blues.

Webster felt last season was the first time he showed his true capabilities for Pompey.

That saw the Tractor Boys come knocking for a move he’s delighted to make.

But Webster admitted that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a wrench to leave Fratton Park.

He feels he leaves, however, with Pompey on a path to reach the level he’s moved to.

Webster said: ‘The move was a massive opportunity for me, and I was buzzing to get it.

‘But it’s obviously so sad to leave my only club.

‘I’ve been here since I was about 11 and in the first team for quite a few years now.

‘I’ve got a lot of friends at the club and it is home for me.

‘Last season was really enjoyable for me after a tough couple of seasons.

‘It was the first season I felt I showed what I could do, and I was comfortable in myself.

‘It was a massive step in the right direction, and I’ve literally got no doubt the club will go up next season.

‘Pompey will soon be back in the Championship if not the Premier League.’

Webster explained it was talks with Paul Cook which paved the way for his departure, after Ipswich made their move.

He feels he can leave Fratton Park with his head held high.

Webster said: ‘I’ve been committed to Pompey from my first moment at the club to the last.

‘I never took my eye off what I wanted to achieve.

‘There was interest but when Ipswich said they wanted to come and pay money for me it was different.

‘It’s a big change, but I feel it’s come at the right time.

‘I sat down with the gaffer and he asked how I was feeling about it.

‘He said it’s a great opportunity for me and a chance to go there and do well. I couldn’t turn it down.

‘Now I’m at a Championship club and that’s because of hard work.

‘I’m delighted about that, but Portsmouth will always be close to me.

‘Pompey will always be in my heart and if Ipswich don’t have a game I’ll always come and have a watch.

‘I’ve got great memories of my time there and I will never forget them.’
