‘We’ll be lucky to win another game’

The Pirates have lost all three of their matches since the turn of the year, the latest of which was a 2-1 defeat away to struggling Saltdean United last weekend.

Bexhill manager Munday lamented: “Forget promotion, we’ll be lucky to win another game this season playing like we have the last couple of games.

“We do miss big players like Andy Atkin, myself and Scott McDonald, and we just haven’t got anything. I don’t know whether it’s the passion or the quality, but there’s something lacking.”

Bexhill appeared to be in with a genuine chance of clinching one of the three promotion places in Macron Store Sussex County Football League Division Two as they ended 2014 unbeaten in the league for three months and having won four on the spin.

But they now trail third-placed AFC Uckfield Town by three points having played an extra game and they only have six remaining, five of which are away from home.

“We’re lucky we’re at this end of the table or else we would be in relegation trouble,” continued Munday. “We’ve played some of the weaker sides and we’ve deserved nothing out of it.”

Munday will be demanding a positive reaction when Bexhill travel to Steyning Town tomorrow (Saturday).

“It will be interesting to see the reaction and see what type of character they (the players) have got,” Munday added. “The reaction has got to improve; they’ve got to play as though they want to be playing.

“Let’s just get back to one game at a time and play with a bit of pride to get us through. I wouldn’t hesitate to drop any of them at the minute. I don’t think any of them could complain if I leave them out.”

Having lost twice against Mile Oak this season, Little Common will be hoping it’s third time lucky when they host the Brighton-based outfit in Sussex Division Two tomorrow. Kick-off at the Recreation Ground is 3pm.

Fifth-placed Oak ended the 100% home record of leaders Worthing United last weekend and will still harbour hopes of breaking into the top three.

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge said: “They’ll come with a lot of confidence. They’re always a strong, solid team and don’t give much away. We know we’re going to be in for a tough game, but if we turn in a performance like last weekend (when Common won 2-1 at Storrington), I’m sure we’ll get our rewards.”

Lewis Hole is at a wedding, but fellow striker Steve Morris will return for a Common side which is back up to seventh having scored and conceded 42 league goals.

“We just want to finish as high as we can really,” added Eldridge, who wants his team to make the most of the fact that four of its remaining six games are at home.
