West Sussex Football League round-up: West Chiltington survive scare to take pole position

West Chiltington went top of the Premier Division on goal difference after an entertaining 4-2 defeat of Lavant.

In an evenly contested first half, Chilt hit the woodwork twice, once through Dan Clayton’s volley, before Dan Leppard’s scrambled goal put them ahead before James Sandford levelled the scores.

Chilt responded with wave after wave of second half pressure, and it was rewarded when Weedon out-jumped his man to nod home Clayton’s cross before Craig Dawson netted from a Leppard pass and Craig Pulling made it four from the penalty spot when Tom Freeman had been felled. Lavant’s second caused a few jitters, but Chilt resisted.

Constantin Dariciuc’s first goal for Barns Green was the only highlight in a disappointing 4-1 defeat the hands of East Dean in Division 1.

Green went ahead through Dariciuc’s fifth minute strike, but it was all downhill from there as they failed to cope with the physical strength of East Dean and their lively front two.

With the scores level at half time, a lamentable performance from the players saw them ship in three more goals and East Dean could afford the luxury of missing a penalty.

Manager Tom Millar said: “This was our worst performance in over a year.
