Why Worthing boss is having to calm his players down

Adam Hinshelwood says he is having to be careful to keep a lid on his players’ enthusiasm for football following their return to training.

The Mackerel Men have had up to two dozen players taking part in two or three sessions a week – and the manager says it’s high-tempo stuff.

Seeing how committed the players are has convinced Hinshelwood the club were right to get the squad together again as soon as they were allowed, even though there are no league or cup games to come until the new season starts in August and most other clubs at their level have not reconvened.

Worthing have beaten Pagham and Littlehampton in friendlies and hope to arrange another match for this Saturday before hosting Loxwood a week later.

It’s been a mixture of experienced squad members and younger up-and-coming stars trying to play their way into his plans who have been attending training and Hinshelwood is impressed at their level of commitment.

“The tempo has been really good, they’re really enjoying being back out there,” said the boss.

“In fact I’m having to calm them down a bit and remind them it’s just training and in-house games.

“I think the fact they were unable to train as a group for so long is part of it. They’ve shown they’re just hungry to play football.”

As reported last week, Worthing’s squad has been boosted by news that experienced defender Aarran Racine has rejoined the squad after taking a break from football.

Hinshelwood said Racine would be vital to their hopes of success in 2021-22.

Hinshelwood said: “It’s a real positive for us. Not only is he a very talented centre-back but his experience and his demeanour around the place, his leadership qualities, are important to us.”

Hinshelwood is talking to existing players about deals for next season and expects to start getting signatures soon.

He hopes to add some new faces but is keen to run a careful rule over every member of the current crop, including the youngsters, and make squad changes only if they will make the team stronger for the club’s next Isthmian premier promotion bid.
