Wick get two wins

WICK Football Club manager Gary Block was delighted with his side’s performance on Tuesday evening when they beat high-flying Three Bridges 3-0 at Crabtree Park.

The win followed Wick’s 2-1 success over Redhill on Saturday, and Block said: “It was a good win on Tuesday and we played well. We had a little bit of luck with the two penalties we got but these things even themselves out over a season.”

Wick went ahead early on from the penalty spot, although the initial foul on Michael Frangou, Block said, was probably outside the area. That did not concern Frangou, though, who stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

Wick keeper Maciek Kason made a decent save to keep the score at 1-0 at half-time, before Rob Wimble doubled Wick’s lead early in the second half.

Wimble also had a majestic 45-yarder cannon back off the bar, while Kason also made a couple of smart stops before Wick sealed their win late on.

Michael Asare went down in the penalty area, Block said it looked like he had slipped, but another penalty was forthcoming and Frangou slotted it away to complete the league double over Bridges.

Block is now looking to finish around mid-table, with possible ground grading issues coming to the fore and said: “We need to make sure we finish above Hailsham, Selsey and Lingfield, so we can’t go down

“We’ve done our bit on the pitch. I was asked to finish fourth from bottom when I took over but we might need a mid-table finish now.”

Goals from Frangou and Asare gave Wick victory against Redhill on Saturday but they will be without Rob Brown for the remainder of the season with a knee ligament injury.

Block said: “I felt we should have killed it off before they got back to 2-1, but we played very well and it was a good win.”

Frangou put Wick ahead in the 10th minute after good build-up play from Ashley Hunter and Wimble, and after Andy Brown and Seb Baggura had efforts saved, Asare knocked in the second on 64 minutes to double the lead.

Redhill pulled a goal back late on, but Wick held out.

Wick travel to third-from-bottom St Francis on Saturday and are at Hailsham on Tuesday. Block said: “If we beat St Francis, we’ll be 18 points ahead of them and they’ll have just 21 points to play for, so we’ll go there and try to get the win.”

Wick will be without the injured quintet of Danny Towers, Lee Wilkins, Rob Brown, Ashley Hunter and Ruben French but Lee Bradshaw could return to action, after he was on the bench on Tuesday.
