Wick see light at the end of the tunnel

WICK Football Club chairman Keith Croft believes there could be light at the end of a long tunnel for the club after a positive meeting on Tuesday evening (May 3).

Last week, Croft said that the club was in a do-or-die scenario and that he had a great concern about the club’s future.

But a meeting attended by 20 to 25 people this week has produced a number of positives and suggested the County League Division 1 club does have a future.

A number of volunteers stepped forward to offer help with getting the pitch sorted and seats in, while there was also interest in some of them joining the committee and talks of a local organisation coming on board.

Croft, who has virtually been handling the day-to-day runnings of the club for the past year on his own, said: “I am not downhearted as people have shown the club still has a bit of a future.

“The good thing is there were some really positive things to come out of the meeting, and we’ll be holding another meeting on May 31, to see where we go from there.

“In the meantime, we can get the pitch and club sorted and, hopefully, a few more people will come forward in that time.

“Things aren’t as bad as I originally thought. I don’t want people to think the club is on its way out, it’s not, but what it needs is people willing to lend a hand.”

Croft will also be speaking to first-team manager Gary Block over the next couple of weeks, in the hope that he will stay at the club.

Croft said: “I very much want Gary to be a part of the club. He loves the club, the area and the people, but he’s a winner and wants to be challenging for the league, and if we haven’t got that impetus, he doesn’t feel it’s where he wants to be.

“Anyone interested in coming on to the committee or lending a hand, or even offering any advice, would be very much appreciated.”

Small work parties will be at the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm, and 10.30am on Saturdays, and any hands or advice will be welcome.
