Rye beat Arundel 2-1 in an FA Cup extra preliminary round replay, while Common triumphed by the same scoreline in a Sussex County Football League Division Two match hit by a temporary floodlight failure.

Rye fell behind to an early Scott Tipper goal in a ‘home’ tie being played at their opponents’ ground due to The Salts still being in the hands of Rye Cricket Club.

But the Quarterboys levelled courtesy of an own goal two minutes into the second half and went on to clinch only their second ever FA Cup victory through Evan Archibald’s 65th minute winner. Rye will travel to Chipstead in the preliminary round on Saturday August 31.

Common took just three minutes to open the scoring via Lewis Hole. Although Billy Pout equalised for Seaford in the 36th minute, Common player-manager Russell Eldridge grabbed what proved to be the winner four minutes later by converting the rebound after his penalty had been saved.

Josh Elliott-Noye hit the crossbar with a header from a 53rd minute corner and Hole spurned two good opportunities to put Common further ahead. The lights went out midway through the second half, but they came back on fairly soon afterwards and Common completed their second win in four days.
