Worthing are top - but boss identifies room for improvement

Worthing sit proudly at the top of the Isthmian premier division – but Adam Hinshelwood says there’s still room for improvement.

Three goals in 15 minutes from Mo Diallo, Ricky Aguiar and Dayshonne Golding earned a 3-1 win at Margate after the hosts had taken the lead.

It means Hinshelwood’s team have won five league games out of six and lead the pack even though many clubs have played more.

They face two more trips in the coming week, heading to East Thurrock on Saturday and Potters Bar on Tuesday.

The manager praised the work-rate his team was showing but said they needed to kill off opposition teams when dominating.

“We regrouped well at Margate after going 1-0 down. It was important to get in front before half-time and for the first 20 minutes of the second half Margate struggled to get out of their half,” said Hinshelwood.

“If I’m being ultra-critical it was disappointing not to build on the 3-1 lead. We got a bit loose on the ball and the Spurs-West Ham game the next day showed you can easily lose control if you let a team back to 3-2.

“But overall I was delighted and it’s nice to be top, though it is very early.

“I was worried whether the players would come back this season with the hunger they showed last year but so far they have. We have to keep that going now.”

Hinshelwood’s selection options are set to be increased as three key men – defender Alfie Young, midfield general Darren Budd and forward Jesse Starkey – reach full fitness. And the boss said he’d need his whole squad with the sequence of two games a week continuing.

After the visits to East Thurrock and Potters Bar, Worthing will head to Leiston on October 31 in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

Then they’re at home(at horshamFC) to Three Bridges in the Sussex Senior Cup on November 4.

It now looks like remedial work on the artificial pitch at Woodside Road, likely to take around a month, will start next Monday.

Meanwhile Hinshelwood is focusing on the league games to come – and taking nothing for granted. “It’s a very close league and I think you have to disregard each team’s past results when you play them.”
