Worthing boss White targets FA Cup glory at Enfield

WORTHING Football Club manager Chris White has set his sights on reaching the FA Cup third-qualifying round.

Rebels face a second-qualifying round clash at Ryman League Division 1 North side Enfield Town on Sunday, which has £4,500 prize money at stake.

White has seen his side crash home 12 goals so far in two rounds of the competition, and although he knows his side are capable of pulling off another goal fest, he would be satisfied with any win. He said: “We are always very capable of scoring and if we play to our potential, anything could happen. To be honest, though, I would settle for just the one goal and the win.

“I don’t know too much about them but they have started well, winning four and losing two.

“It’s a tough game but a winnable one as they are at the same level as us. And they have similar form to Ashford, when we beat them. We will be travelling there to win, no doubt about it.”

The match is taking place on a Sunday owing to Enfield groundsharing at Brimsdown Rovers’ Goldsdown Road, and White will be hoping playing on a usual day-off will not cause his strikers problems, especially top scorer Terry Dodd, who has netted seven goals in all competitions so far.

White said: “Terry has done well and he is a handful for any defence. He has a good partnership with Matt Geard. They did well for me last season, and they are starting to click again now.”

If Sunday’s game (3pm kick-off) is a draw, the replay will take place at the A2B Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Heading into last night’s (Wednesday) Ryman League Division 1 South clash at Eastbourne Town, Rebels were without Kevin Townsend and Ben Bowra, but both are expected back for Sunday.

Midfielder Ryan Woodford has joined Ryman Premier Division side Horsham, having not made a competitive appearance for Worthing this campaign.

Woodford, the last remaining Rebel from the Simon Colbran era last season, was sent-off in a pre-season friendly and was hit with a three-match suspension. He then did not sign on for the first league game, which extended the ban.

White said: “I had told him to get some football under his belt as I hadn’t even seen him at the club for a month, and the next thing I know, he’s joined Horsham.

“It’s to play at a higher level, though, and I wish him well.”
